Japan Non-Wood Paper Association to import bagasse containers from Thailand through 3 trading companies next spring
Japan Non-Wood Paper Association will begin importing 100%-bagasse pulp molded containers (containers cast with molds) in collaboration with a Thai food container company. The containers are manufactured by BPECO based in Bangkok, Thailand. A dedicated factory with an annual production capacity of 200 million containers was completed in October of this year in Chainat, situated north of Bangkok. Production has already begun. The Association has obtained the rights as the sole agency in Japan to sign an agency agreement with OG Corporation, Tomen Chemical Co., Ltd., and Nagase & Co., Ltd., and will commence full-scale sale activities next April. It plans to sell 40 million containers a year, accounting for 20% of total production. Expansion of the factory in Chinat is planned to achieve a 600-ton production capacity over the next few years, and the les in Japan are expected to follow suit.

The Association began importing bagasse pulp for use in paper for printing and copying in February in cooperation with EPPCO, a member of Thai Ekalak Group. BPECO's molded containers are also made from EPPCO's 100% bagasse pulp, without using any wood pulp. It also adopted ECF (Element Chlorine Free) bleaching, thus further reducing environmental impact. The containers biodegrade approximately 45 days after use. Similar to other organic wastes, these products generate methane gas for fuel and thus can be recycled as a renewable source of energy.

The unique manufacturing process achieves resistance to water, hot water (up to 120 ° c), and oil. The containers also withstand high temperatures (up to 250 ° c) and low temperatures (down to -40 ° c), hence affording diverse applications, including lunch boxes, trays, and cups. Approximately 70 types of products are currently being manufactured, and they can be also molded into various shapes in response to user requests.

Major supermarkets in Thailand - Carrefour, Tesco, and Tops - have already started selling the containers, and the sales are increasing. Shipments to Europe and North America are also expanding as environmentally compatible containers. In Japan, sales promotion campaigns targeting major supermarkets, restaurants, hospitals and schools are slated to begin this winter, in preparation for full-scale sales activities to be launched next spring.
