Added Momentum to Expansion of Commissioned Business Growing Expectations for Optically Active Substances
Nagase &  Co., Ltd. is currently expanding its commissioned business involving optically active substances. The business is being developed through the collaborative efforts of the Nagase Research &  Development Center in Kobe City and Nagase ChemteX Corp., the manufacturing division of Nagase, which also serves as the core of the Group's manufacturing function. Nagase ChemteX manufactures optically active substances using the process developed by the Research &  Development Center using its core technology. Market assessment is high for Nagase's ability to supply optically active substances using optimal manufacturing methods and as a result it holds a unique position in this field.

Nagase's unique characteristics lie in its proprietary technology, which utilizes asymmetric molecule catalysts and biocatalysts (enzymes, microorganisms) to freely form optically active substances with various structures, in addition to its splitting method using diastereomeric salt formation and the chiral-pool method using optically active materials.

In particular, Nagase is putting its greatest efforts in the manufacture of unnatural amino acids using the "Maruoka Catalyst ™" (asymmetric phase-transfer catalyst), and the development of a hybrid process that combines biocatalysts and organic synthesis. And products made from this process are already attracting wide-ranging attention. In terms of unnatural amino acids, Nagase is promoting its use as chiral building blocks for intermediates and also as raw materials for peptide pharmaceuticals.

Much progress has been made in this business and consequently Nagase is already involved in funded research for the development of processes, commissioned by various pharmaceutical companies. In fact, several items have been developed to the point where they are actually being manufactured on the cGMP-compatible APIs and intermediates facilities at Nagase ChemteX's Fukuchiyama Plant. In terms of the commissioned business involving APIs and intermediates, the Nagase Group will continue to make a concerted effort to strengthen collaboration with the Research &  Development Center, Nagase ChemteX and others and develop it as a focused, development-oriented commissioned manufacturing business.
