It is rather unique that Nagase, its main business being trading and marketing, owns research and development facility of its own.
Nagase R & D Center opened in 1990 at Kobe High-Tech Park.
Its main work is,
- Organic synthesis of chiral compounds,
- Technology development in biotech area using enzymes and fermentation methods

Analytical work of pharmaceuticals
Nagase R&D Center is also involved in developing commercially practical processes of the chemical compounds making use of its own technology. Such processes are actually employed at Nagase ChemteX, or other producers. Joint research work with customers is another aspect of Nagase R&D Center.
