Nagase R&D Center, Hayashibara, and Nagase ChemteX hold underlying technologies related to research, development and production of microorganisms, fermentation products, enzymes, and products of enzyme reactions.
The NAGASE Biotech Office gathers together the biotech of the NAGASE Group to provide technology value unique to NAGASE. The Biotech Office also uses biotech to develop new materials unique to NAGASE, conceive businesses with companies across the Group, and actively put these business plans into action, creating sustainable businesses.
Strengths of the NAGASE Group's Biotech
- Microbial screening technology
- Improvement of productivity through microbial breeding, genetic engineering and metabolic engineering
- Production technology and production facilities for cultures, fermentation, and enzyme reactions
- Functionality evaluation/analysis technology
- Meeting regulations
- Genetic modification
Commercialization of Ergothioneine
Ergothioneine is a rare natural amino acid found in trace amounts in mushrooms and other organisms, with excellent antioxidant properties and properties which improve brain function. It has high potential as a next-generation functional material and it is anticipated that it could help with neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's and Parkinson's), depression, skin aging due to ultraviolet light (wrinkles and spots), cataracts, and glycation stress.
Through Nagase R&D Center research with the unique fermentation technology of the NAGASE Group as a core technology, a revolutionary fermentation process was established achieving one of the highest production efficiency levels using microorganisms in the world*. Using the producing strain developed, commercialization will be carried out through applications in the field of life sciences such as health foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.
